CHAPTER 18

CLARA

Nothing shocked me like seeing Beta Charles. I didn't expect to see him in this pack but what shocked me more is to see him in the state he was in. Obviously he had lost a lot of weight and his clothes were sagging, and he had bruises all over his body, some fresh, to suggest that he had suffered them recently. His face was covered in dried blood, evidence that he was involved in a vicious fight. My shock consumed me and I began to fall backwards. But strong arms held me and prevented me from falling to the ground. Beta Charles looked worried and he began to walk the short distance between us. Clive growled, stopping him in his tracks.

"Clive, I'm fine," I told him as he helped me up.

Beta Charles walked over to me. His shaggy hair and unshaved beard contrasted with the sharply dressed man I had grown to know. When he reached me I pulled him into a hug. I started to cry and Clive pulled me close, soothing me.
