Jack closed his eyes as he put on the headset, and then he felt his consciousness falling. It was dark, and suddenly he saw light, and then he landed face first onto the ground, though he didn't feel any pain, just the feeling of bumping into something.

"The hell?"

He let out a groan and held his face, though he didn't feel anything. Just a reflex of his body.

He stood up and looked around, and he saw Sasha standing in the center again. He walked towards her with an 'I don't know what's happening' look.

When he reached her, a screen popped up in front of him along with another mannequin.

"Modify your character and pick your class, kingdom, and race. Since this is a beta test, you have access to all the classes. Feel free to try them all out," Sasha explained.

In the end, Jack made his character an 18-year-old with long black hair that reached halfway down his back, and he made his red eyes even 'redder'.

The mannequin changed with each button he pressed on the system screen. When he was done, he moved to race and chose [Human]. For class, he chose [Assassin], and for kingdom, he chose [Crimsonfall Kingdom].

"To be honest, I was just picking randomly."

"Let's gooooo!!!" he shouted as he started falling again.

"Shit!"

"Oof- Oh wait, that didn't hurt."

Jack stood up and dusted his not-so-dirty leather trousers, and then he looked at his hands and body for the first time. It felt so... real.

He looked down and saw himself in a pair of leather trousers, leather shoes, and a white shirt. He had a little leather bag slung over his shoulder, and that was all. He looked like any other plebeian you'd see on the road.

"Daddy! Another person fell from heaven!"

"S-stay back, Carla. Maybe God is flushing out the evil angels."

Jack's thoughts were interrupted by two voices, and he looked up to see a fairly old man and what looked like an eight-year-old girl. The old man held a spiky stick and was brandishing it at Jack, though his hands and legs were quivering in fear, as was the girl behind him.

'Why are they scared of me?' Jack wondered, and then he decided to talk.

"Good afternoon... or morning?"

"Stay- stay back! I-I-I'm not afraid of you!"

"Get away from Daddy!"

'My god, are people this stupid nowadays? Oh wait, they're NPCs.' Jack's thoughts trailed.

He decided to leave them in the end, knowing that he wouldn't be able to get any info from them. The fear of him had clouded their sense of reasoning.

He took a step forward and then stopped because he heard a 'ding' in his head, and a system screen popped up in front of him.

"The fuck? I haven't even moved around yet, and I don't even know where I am, and I've gotten a quest already?!" Jack exclaimed.

'...the other applicants have started already.'

Sasha's words floated into his mind, and then it hit him. "Oh, that's why. The others are already getting quests."

He looked back at the system screen and held his bald chin in thought. "I'll shove it off for later. So first, how do I get rid of this screen?"

"Disappear! Teleport! Abracadabra!"

~huff~ ~huff~...

Suddenly, his body moved and he dodged a stone. He looked at his assailant and saw the little girl shaking in her boots, holding more stones.

"G-go a-a-away, d-devil!"

Then something snapped in Jack's brain. Calling him the devil was something that he couldn't stand in his mind. Sure, he was able to hold it in real life, but his character now was a reflection of his mind, meaning it was his true self.

The moment the girl uttered those words, Jack appeared beside her, and with a 'snap', he twisted her neck, and the five-year-old fell to the floor—dead–not even getting the time to scream.

Her father didn't even see it coming. His daughter fell to the floor just like that. For a second, he seemed to be glitching. This wasn't supposed to happen in the game.

Jack turned his head to look at him, and when their eyes met, the man almost died. His eyeballs were red, his sclera had blended with his irises, and they were crimson red altogether.

His long black hair floated in the air, and blood slowly dripped out of his mouth. He had achieved a new state, though it came at the cost of his sanity.
