Chapter 19

LUCAS

I had walked straight into an ambush.

One minute I was trying to get to my grandmother and the next, the night became a smoking nightmare of screams and muzzle flashes as bullets flew out of speeding bulletproof vehicles. They came from nowhere and soon I was surrounded. I knew Nico would keep Drew safe. She’d be an idiot to get out of the car in the middle of this madness. My focus was on getting to nonna and I was oblivious to the body’s of innocent bystanders as they dropped like dominoes, while some lucky ones scrambled for cover in the sudden stampede. It was all struggle, all hell—a flashing, blinding, chaos.

Bullets ate the steps all around me, spraying shards of lead and shattered stone. Metal buzzed like angry hornets around our heads as shots rang out on both sides, and soon, there was a full-on gunfight as my men sprang into action and retaliated.
