Mortimer wanted to escape from the questioning gazes that were fixed on him, waiting to know the answers they all wanted to hear so badly at that moment. If he had known that keeping so many people in the Castle would make it harder for him to maintain the security during the nights of full moon, he would have definitely thought twice before allowing all the servants to stay on the castle grounds.
He would have saved himself from answering their questions only if the one asking them was someone else other than Lady Winters. Though the woman was still not married to the Shadow Lords and couldn't be considered as the lady of the castle, she was still an honorable guest in the castle and he needed to treat her with respect.
However, he couldn't answer her questions truthfully as doing that would make him betray his masters' trust. Taking in a deep breath, he decided to recite the story he had been cooking in his mind ever since that morning in case he needed to use it.
