He manages a faint smile, seeming a little more relaxed now that he's seen Marlowe is all right. Marlowe, on the other hand, is still taken aback by this revelation.
"Wow—I had no idea you'd met each other already," they say, giving each of you a questioning glance. "How did that happen? Were you—wait, outside the park? What did you think he was going to do?"
Ennis scratches his chin and sighs.
"Well—you know, I'm not saying I was in the right," he tells Marlowe, "but I was just heading to bed that night, and I thought I saw something in the park. I'm always nervous of what people might get up to after sneaking into someplace they're not supposed to be after dark, and I just wanted to check it out. I happened to run into Huknock outside the gates, and I may have reacted a little…defensively," he finishes, a tinge of guilt in his voice.
