Ennis grimaces, looking a little apologetic.
"Well—anything can look suspicious if you're looking for things to be suspicious of. I wouldn't have thought anything of somebody standing outside the park unless I already had it in my head that there was going to be some trouble. So, don't worry; it's me, not you, who's a little too suspicious."
He gives you a reassuring nod, seeming to promise that that's going to change.
"No—I realize it's probably not my business to be sticking my nose in every which where," Ennis says, "But…old habits die hard."
He pauses, giving Marlowe what seems to be a significant look.
In that moment, you remember him saying something similar on the night you ran into him. He told you it was hard to shake off some of his older instincts after being a firefighter for so long.
Given that history, you can understand why he would have a tendency to want to protect other people. But at the same time, you can't help but think that his fatherly behavior towards Marlowe must have its roots in something deeper than just the fact that they're roommates.
