Chapter 42: The tightening noose

David left for the airport in just enough time to arrive at exactly eleven o’clock. Normally, he would be early, but something told him that being late might be in his best interest.

Something was wrong. Something did not sit well. David watched the road as it passed. It was the same asphalt it had always been. The lights shone down with cold indifference to the world below. Other cars passed him by. People went about their lives as if nothing was wrong.

And of course, in their lives, nothing was wrong. Not in their lives.

A car passed David. License plate ZSG1788. It was a black Lincoln. Nondescript. It had been behind him for almost a mile, not seeming to mind the pace he was driving. Suddenly, it sped up, moving around him and off into the distance. It could be that the person got fed up and decided to speed. Maybe they knew about a speed trap, and had just passed it.

Or maybe it was a rotating tail.
