Chapter 41: The danger sense

David paced around his apartment, trying to figure out what had just happened. Something wasn’t right with Jessica.

If she were going to land at eleven, that meant she would be getting on the next available flight. If she was doing that, it had to be important. What was she holding back? She wasn’t usually able to hop a flight like this.

This wasn’t a social call. Not exactly.

David played the conversation back in his head, slowly, paying attention to every detail. He had picked up the phone. “Michael?” she had said. Her tone was questioning. That was to be expected. But there was more to it. She knew it was his number. She wasn’t sure he would answer it. Did she think he was in trouble?

She was less patient than normal. David had only been quiet for a second, trying to get his mind back into the mode of Michael Crane, and she had asked again. She didn’t usually do that. She knew someone else was on the line. Why had she asked a second time?
