Chapter 47: The truth

She cried for several minutes. She sobbed into him, tearing herself apart, ripping at David’s heart. His body shook while she wept. When she finally stopped crying, she held tight to him, trying to get control of herself, trying to bring her world back together.

It wasn’t safe. Parked on the side of a highway, they were too good of a target. Anyone could hit them there. It was dangerous. They should have been driving away, putting more distance between them and the airport. But David couldn’t just drive, not while Jessica was feeling the way she felt. He couldn’t let her be alone, not now.

So he took the risk. He let himself be in danger; he let her be in danger. He let her hold on to him, after the sobbing had stopped, after she had regained her composure. He let her hold on to him as she caught her breath.
