Chapter 53: Travel money

David went back into the elevator, put the money inside the emergency call box, and sent it down to the bottom floor. He was back out of the elevator before it had gone two floors down.

There is a switch on the door of an elevator, on the inside of the shaft. When that switch is flipped, the door opens. David hooked his feet into the ladder, then reached the few feet to pull the lever. The door slid open, and David waited, ready to toss anyone who investigated down the shaft.

He waited.

And waited.

David held his breath, listening for any sounds. The sound of breathing, of feet shuffling on carpet, of a gun’s hammer being pulled back, or even a cell phone warning others that he had arrived.

Nothing.

David flipped himself into his hallway, holding the knife, with the blade down, pressed against his forearm. He was ready to use that battered knife, but there was, as he had thought, no one there.
