Chapter 54: The bomb

David noticed her pulling onto the interstate. “Where are we going?” He asked her.

“My sister lives in Aurora.” She said. “It’s just down the road. You can drop me off there.”

He shrugged again and echoed himself. “I guess that’s as good a stopping point as any.”

Jessica started to chatter. “Oh Michael, wait until you meet her. You’ll just adore her. At first, anyway. She does tend to get on everyone’s nerves after a little while, but for ten, twenty seconds, you’ll just love her.” David smiled again. It was nice to see her in such good spirits. “Michael, what’s wrong? You look upset.”

He forced a smile on his face. “Nothing, Jessica.”

“You used to be a better liar.” Her brow furrowed.

He smiled again. “I’m just not looking forward to the time when we’re not together.”

“What do you mean?”

He had to lie. It was a thin one. “When I drop you off. We’ll be apart. At least for a while.”
