As I look at myself in the mirror, wiping the moisture from the shower off my body, the glint from the wedding ring around my neck catches my eye. I’ve worn this ring around my neck since I buried Katie with hers. It’s always been my shield, from opening myself up to others, when I’m nervous I grab hold of it, and when I talk to her, I hang on to it.


I’m learning something in the last few months though. I can count on Caroline for a lot of the things I counted on this ring for. I don’t always have to have it there. My arms shake as I reach around my neck, fingering the clasp. This time, when I remove it, I know it’ll be forever.
