- The Man on the Bridge."There she is," said Sergeant Daley. He was standing near the back of the squad car, talking through the open window to someone on the radio. "That one in the black coat. She looks like an ordinary person."Daley was right. This woman, dressed in a simple blouse, jeans, and sandals, wasn't what most people would think of as a 'ordinary person'.She looked to be in her early thirties or forties, although she had the slight build of someone much younger than that. Her hair, tied up in a ponytail, was blonde but not light colored, which could mean she didn't dye it often. Her brown eyes, behind round glasses, were sharp and intelligent. As she stepped away from the car, her hands went into the front pockets of her jeans, and her body relaxed, revealing that she knew how to fight even though she didn't have any weapons on display. There was just something about her demeanor that suggested she wasn't going to stand down, and that the police officers who wanted to arrest her weren't going to get very far.As Sergeant Daley opened the door and stepped out to talk to her, his partner, Officer Kattakala, walked around the car and got out as well. She was a petite Asian woman, and she was wearing a plain navy blue uniform. As she approached the woman, she nodded politely."You're looking good today, ma'am," the sergeant commented, smiling."Thank you," replied the woman."I'm Sergeant Daley. My partner's name is Officer Kattakala," he said, introducing them both. "What can I do for you?"The woman smiled and then took a moment to look both policemen over carefully."My name is Agent Linao. I work for the United Nations Security Council. I'd like you to follow me to my office, please." She turned around and started walking."Of course, ma'am," said the sergeant, nodding. The other officer did the same, following the woman and her two colleagues as they began walking toward UN headquarters."We're investigating the disappearances of several scientists recently," the sergeant explained, keeping his voice low so nobody nearby could hear him. "We've been searching your building for a few days now, but nothing seemed out of place.""Yes, I understand," the woman said. She didn't seem particularly concerned by the revelation, however. "Our security is top secret, and we don't allow anyone access to our buildings without authorization.""But there aren't supposed to be any terrorists around here, are there?" the sergeant asked."No, no terrorists," the woman assured him. "But we still keep a very close eye on all of the entrances and exits. We don't want anyone getting in before we know they intend to."When they reached the building, they walked inside and went through a metal detector. In the lobby was a large reception desk, manned by four armed guards and a civilian receptionist, and then past the receptionists desks, to the elevators. The elevator was crowded. It took only seconds for them to get inside, since everyone wanted to take the elevator."Excuse me," said the woman, who seemed used to such behavior. "Would you mind giving us some privacy?"Two of the guard dogs sat down next to the elevator doors while the third stayed outside and watched over everyone. As soon as the door closed, the dogs stood and barked at the passengers, as if warning them to behave. They were met in the hallway by three more security agents
