Chapter 29: The Problem with Adam

“Adam is old,” Marian said. “Older than I am, for certain. Likely older than Jacques - than Jonathan as well. He is old enough that one does not ask him how old he is.

“There are currently four in the area who he has turned. One every hundred years, if that gives you some idea. Did you notice the way he moves? He cannot stay still. There is always something driving him onward.

“When I first arrived in the cities, I was immediately wary of him. Though I do not think I was wary enough. One can never be wary enough of someone like Adam.”
