Chapter 20: Sicking Psychos on Each Other

“He sounds like a lunatic,” Harley said. “Do you really think it’ll be that easy? Like, we just sick Adam on Jonathan and let them kill each other?”

“Nothing is ever easy, ma cherie. I cannot be sure that Adam will kill Jonathan. And I cannot be sure that he will take the bait. If we want to use him effectively, we have to set them up to go after one another, and then be there when the dust settles.”

“Do vampires turn to dust when they die?”

“Non, ma cherie. But we do turn to the state we should be in, had death claimed our bodies when it was meant to. After a few years, it makes little difference. At their age, dust. But that is not what I meant.”

“What did you mean?”

“I meant that when they kill one another, we should be there to kill the winner.”

Harley gave Marian a shocked look. Marian looked back at her with confusion.

“Sorry,” Harley said. “I just - I didn’t expect you to be quite so brutal. Kill the winner? Why?”
