Chapter 32: It’s Worse Than you Thought

“He was trying to stake me!” she protested. “I just got the better of him.”

She told Walter the story. By the time she finished, he had started pacing back and forth across the room, looking more and more worried. “This is bad. He thinks you tried to kill him.”

“But I didn’t. I made sure he’d survive the sun. I put him in the shade.”

“When we were kids, he almost got run over by a cart. The man driving the cart said it was an accident, insisted that he hadn’t seen him. But Jehan was convinced that the man had tried to kill him.”

“What happened?”

“Jehan nailed the man’s door shut in the middle of the night. He made sure they couldn’t get out through the door. This was before you had to have two means of egress. He nailed their door shut and jammed a stick into the crack in the door so that it wouldn’t open.
