Chapter 13: Figuring out the system

During magic practice Helen and Rex where still talking, they were exceptional students when it came to magic so the teacher didn't mind, they were trying to figure out the system and how it works, so far they had found out a few things.

"So your stats are the same as your physical attributes but you can't increase them by working out, also when you eat someone you gain half their stats and magical powers is that right?"

"yup"

"but then why are there beast points as part of your stats"

"I don't know, judging by the number it seems I get beast points for every person I kill"

"have you tried adding them to your stats"

"I have but it doesn't work, I've tried tinkering with the system before but there where a lot of things that didn't work as in normal games, like for example in games if you use a skill a lot it goes up a level but it's not the same with the system"

"hmm, maybe the beast points are for upgrading the skills, have you tried that?"

"no not yet, let me try".

He opened the system and thought of upgrading his skills, immediately the screen changed and new info where on display

Skill: Healing Factor: Host can heal from any injury( Drawback: consumes energy ).

Skill Upgrade: 10 beast points

Super skill: Beast Awakening: This skill activates when a host's heart beat exceeds a certain limit or when the hosts experience strong emotions ( Drawback: Extreme tiredness or blackout ).

Skill Upgrade: 100 beast points

"it changed"

"what changed"

"the system, I can upgrade the skills with the beast points"

"I thought so" Helen said with a proud smile on her face, "so how many points do you need to upgrade the skills"

"the normal skill needs ten points, but the super skill needs a hundred"

Rex and Helen gulped as they thought of the number of people he needed to kill.

"Let's leave the super skill for now, try upgrading your skill", Rex upgraded his skill healing factor and a number appeared on it

Skill: Healing Factor II ( Skill Upgrade: 20 beast points )

"So did anything change?"

"yh, it changed to healing factor 2 alphanumeric"

"oh I see, can you upgrade it again?"

"yh but I need twenty beast points"

"ok then we can leave that for later, class is almost over we'll talk about this later".

After magic practice class they had a few more classes before PE class, it was just a class where the students could indulge in educational fun, basically it was sports practice, this was the only time Rex talked and hung out with others apart from Helen, but today was different, while playing soccer Helen came to call rex over.

Rex had just delivered a cross to his team mate who was about using a fire spell to shoot the ball into the net when he heard his name being called, while the others celebrated they didn't see rex, only to see him subbing out and going to meet Helen.

what's with those two, are they dating or something

now that I think about it, wasn't Helen the top beauty before Rita transfered

yh, I guess she bagged the new kid

or the new kid bagged the former hotty.

"What's up" rex said

"we still have to figure out how your system works, you can't just slack off"

"I'm not I'm playing soccer, besides what else do we have to figure out"

"how about the fact that we only have about 15 days before you go feral again"

"oh, yh sorry I forgot about that" he said scratching his head

"anyway I've been thinking, what if you only hunt bad people"

"hunt?"

"your system is named beast system and your a beast man so hunt is the right word for it isn't it?"

"I guess, so what you're saying is I hunt criminals, like a vigilante?"

"not exactly, I was thinking we us me as bait to lore out hooligans and scum bags, then when they try to harm me you swoop in and do your thing"

"are you sure, I hate to make you go through that again"

"it's fine, I'll just look away she gulped as the sight of Rex tearing into flesh flashed in her mind"

"ok so that's settled, what else"

"your quest and missions, i was thinking about them, there's one you can accomplish and you don't have to kill anyone"

"which one"

"it's the last mission, get the DNA of animals, I was wondering why you hadn't accomplished this mission since you said you ate meat already, what if it means you hunt them and eat them raw"

"gross"

"It's your bloodline's powers not mine, anyway why don't you give it a try"

"what, now?"

"yh"

"can't we wait after school"

"no we can't, we won't have enough time for that" she said.

Scratching the back of his head a smile creeped on his face, "man this is such a hassle, anyway thank you"

"for what"

"you helping me with all this even when it has nothing to do with you"

"she blushed a little seeing him smile and thanking her"

" it's nothing, I'm just helping out a friend" she said avoiding eye contact with him

"you seem more into it than me tho"

"I'm just curious" she said as she walk away and rex followed

Rex was happy, most times when he thought about the system and what it would make him do, it felt overwhelming for him but with Helen now in on his secret and helping him, he couldn't help but feel happy, it felt like a weight was lifted of his shoulders. Meanwhile Helen was trying to calm her heart down, she was a very smart girl who didn't socialize much and was always aware of her actions and attitude towards people, right now she was acting different from her usual self, she never indulged in other people's business or problems and she never found herself wishing to hang around people that much, a quick and short conversation was enough for her but now things where different.

She couldn't understand why but she wanted to help Rex, spend more time with him, make him rely on her more, when he told her last night that she was the only person who knew about his secret it made her feel a bit special and wanted, now anytime she saw him she couldn't help but want to be around him and her heart would race from any complement or facial reaction she got from him.

They walked all the way to the roof top

"ok so what are we doing here" he asked

"your going to eat a bird?"

"what?"

"yh we are going to shoot a bird down and you eat it"

"do we really have to, it sounds like such a hassle"

"yes we are or rather you are, since your magical power is higher than mine?"

'fine" Rex said as he made a fire ball and targeted a bird far up in the sky,

"I don't see any birds yet"

" don't worry, I can" he said as he launched his spell high up till it vanished from Helens sight, after a while rex used wind magic like a vacuum to suck something out from the sky and like a missile something huge came straight towards Rex.

"What is that?"

he turned around showing her a huge eagle

"what the hell how did you hit that from so far away"

" my physique isn't the only thing that changed, my senses are also heightened as well allowing me to control manna better" he replied.

she was about to say something when he suddenly dropped the burnt bird, embraced her and spun around, his back facing the door.

"What is it?" she asked noticing the serious look in his eyes as he stared at the door

"someone is here"

"who?"

"I don't know but the speed at which they came here is not human".
