It was a dull Saturday, on the seventh of April. Life had been usual apart from the fact that Sarah would sob at night and Lisa had to keep her company in the past four days.
Our life had been a total mess, Jeremy on behalf of the Perkerson family, had kept his word and a cheque had been handed to Sarah just a day before the burial. We had bought back our house and tried to win a chance to be welcomed back into the Perkerson family but that only remained a dream.
"You are not allowed to enter the Perkerson's parlor after the burial ceremony," I remember what an elder had said the day before, "We have done a huge favor by accepting Ruth's body and donating two million dollars, that's all we can do, now you two have to live your life." I could not have believed his words if not for Jeremy and a couple of Sarah's cousins who had been walking close by and overheard the notice. We had thought this elder was being rude but we got knocked out by Jeremy who backed the pale elder who had a yellow face. The elder looked more like an Asian than a Perkerson.
"It's true that we can't accept you two into the family. I apologize for that, but out of a favor I owe your mother, I will keep my word to help you out in the future if you ever need my help." Jeremy tried to pull up a smile, nodding his head as he dispersed the little audience.
After the burial, we left, accompanied by Lisa.
Just because Sarah's mother had married a black African Soldier, she had been banished from her family. We learned that there was once a time when the Perkersons had suffered huge casualties and lost two companies to bankruptcy. At that time, Ruth who had been in her teenage years was the only hope for the Perkersons who had arranged for her to marry off a prosperous Belgium in hopes of getting enough support to cover the losses.
But who would have thought, that on the night before her marriage, Ruth had run off with a black man into the South only to return with a baby girl four years later?
Her action was the real cause of the Perkerson's downfall, it was enough to shame her parents who had been left with no option but to provide a substitute wife for the moneyed Belgium. The rest of the family had voted, and Ruth had been cast out of the family in disgrace.
Our house stood silent amidst the streets, listening to the neighborhood as we walked up the door. We had arrived by bus, we had no money with us, and the house was empty.
The murder case had also gone mute and I had forgotten about my fears. I checked the fridge as Sarah confirmed the shelves, there was nothing to cook.
"I can lend you some money." Lisa offered. We had been depending on her, for the bus tickets to and from the city, we owed her too much.
"How are we going to pay you back?" Sarah shook her head as she saw the 20 dollar note, clean and new stretched out for her.
"Pay me back when you get back on your feet." Lisa pushed the note into Sarah's hand as she volunteered to do the cooking. She was already on her online shopping app ordering some ingredients and flour and rice when I sensed someone at the door.
"I'm going to check." I walked to the door nervously, as I thought back to what I had done a week ago. The body should have rotted by now.
"Hello?" I answered as I opened the door and behold! A young teenager stood confidently at the doorstep, with a mother figure behind her back. I recognized her, it was the girl I had saved last week.
"How may I help you?" I decided to break the silence that was going to grow as the woman introduced herself.
"I'm Christiana Mayer, Jessie 's mother." She introduced herself pulling her hand out for a handshake as I realized the girl's name was Jessie. 'What brings you here? What's up?' my mind ran amuck with questions as the woman went ahead with her speech.
"Regarding what you did for our daughter, I'm here to say thank you."
At this moment Sarah shouted from the living room. "Hey, Green? Who's there?"
"It's a visitor," I replied to Sarah as I opened the door wider and politely welcomed the guests to come in. I had a lot to ask of them.
The living became lively as Christiana observed our state. I knew she figured out our situation as she went straight to the reason why she was here.
"August Green. The Mayer family feel very grateful for you, there is not much we can do to repay the favor but give our little Princess out to you as compensation for what you have gone through." She had her left arm around Jessie's shoulder, indicating that she was the little princess, the knack of my achievement.
I remained silent as Sarah gave a doubtful look at the lady and then the girl, she was too young to be a girlfriend let alone a bride.
"The Mayer family also wishes that you can accept this money as consolation for the grief you have been through."
I remained silent, my eyes were on the girl as I studied her in peeks.
"I can see you have already accepted my princess as your bride." Christiana shook me out of my state as she broke through my thoughts.
The young girl had a figure that was quite appetizing to the look, she was not that young for bed, as long as she had some bumps on the chest, that was enough to say she was ripening.
"Ah, Misses Christiana... I think we shouldn't take this so far... " I shook my head as Sarah bagged in the convoy with Lisa giving confused looks, she was utterly out of comprehension.
"August doesn't need a little immature lass as a reward... He is already engaged!" Sarah created more tension as she went ahead to point at Lisa. "That is his fiancee, and they should be getting married by the end of the month."
"What!"
"WTF!"
I finished off Lisa's awe as Sarah gave her a look that induced her to play along.
"Well if that is the case, I will let the Mayer family organise the wedding and cater for everything. Here, take this, it's a gift from the Mayers, there's a million dollars in it."
I saw the debit card and accepted the offer as I realised who this Mayer was.
"Thank you so much," I said as Sarah pushed Lisa into my side, "She is my wife-to-be," I confirmed as Lisa shrugged but still held onto my arm giving me a sick feeling.
