Chapter 29: Dreams

I bolted upright in bed, breath lodged in my throat and my heart pounding frighteningly. I yelped as the door to my room crashed open and Valen came to a stop abruptly, his eyes alert and scanning my room before coming to rest on me.

"What's wrong?" I asked, his sudden entrance immediately stemming my panic.

Some of the tension drained from his shoulders at my question. With a surety that seemed as natural as breathing, he stalked over to my bed and eased down on one side, with his back against the headboard.

I settled against his side and rested my head on his chest, his steady heartbeat serving to calm the rest of my frayed nerves. His arms banded around me securely. Somewhere along the way, we'd settled on this familiar routine whenever a nightmare woke me up.

I sighed contentedly. Even though I harbored overwhelming frustration about not understanding what these nightmares meant, when I was lying here in Valen’s arms, nothing else seemed to matter.
