Chapter 22: An Uncertain Future

Nick looks at the dragons before him and can’t help but feel contempt for them. He can tell Tris is overwhelmed by the news they are giving her. The life he wants to provide her is one free of responsibility and conflict, but there isn’t anything he can do to change her fate.

“What are you saying?” Tris stutters from beside him.

“You are the one the prophecy spoke of. The one who will wake the elemental dragons from their slumber and bring balance to the realm once more,” Jasper explains in a deep horse tone.

“Nigel is the water dragon. He and the other elementals disappeared from the Kingdom many years ago. It was foretold that two prophets from different walks of life would unite. One to wake the beasts and the other to lead them,” Amethyst calmly recites, as if she’s been told the story a million times.
