Chapter 40: A Sign of Things to Come

Nick lies on his back as the stubborn steed stomps around him. He had decided to finish training the creature for Lucas while he’s away. It will help keep Nick’s mind off of what’s going on outside of his control.

“Nick!” Tris screams from the stable entrance, causing him to sit up and the horse to freeze.

“What?” Nick asks, jumping to his feet before hurrying over to her. “What’s the matter? Are you okay?”

Tris is shaking as he pulls her into him. He isn’t sure who’s more frightened right now, as his own heart races within his chest.

“I thought you were injured,” Tris mumbles, her face tucked into his chest. “Don’t you ever do that to me again,” she scolds, pulling away.

Nick isn’t sure how he can promise such a thing when he didn’t know she was going to be walking into the stable at that exact moment to begin with. He agrees anyway, hoping it will make her feel better.
