What Letters?

Elke sighed and massaged her temple. "Are you serious? I thought he definitely would send you letters. He said he did, and he would send more until you reply."

"I have not heard anything about it. There is no letter. There has been none. Are you sure he said that? Didn't he take Mother's offer? Wasn't it a good recommendation? And he could get away from the war too."

Elke took Elisa's hand and kissed her knuckles. "Sir Karl loves you. Do you think a mere recommendation is worth more than you are to him?"

"But he lied about the letters…" Elisa's voice became weak. 

"Tell you what, I will investigate this. I would not in a million years believe that he is such a man," Elke declared.

Elisa was lovestruck. She and Sir Karl. Elke had seen how much he cried when he heard about Queen Emma's plan to wed Elisa with Landgrave Freidrich. He went as far as to climb to Elisa's balcony to meet her.
