With one hand in my pocket I typed out an address. It was nothing more than a hail merry. But even a stone thrown into a lake, no matter how small, can have great ripples. I grit my teeth and threw my phone to the floor.

From it came tiny bits of metal. It took effort to shatter the phone into manageable pieces, but it was more than worth it. For the beings before me were intelligent.

They stalked with unearthly grace. Blocked exits with the thought of a siege expert. And made sure that they were never alone. I couldn't just hide and pick them off one by one, and I couldn't jump through the windows and try to escape.

No. That was a death sentence.
