Something about the way Eileen adjusts and readjusts the book resting in front of her softens me. Nice to know that even a blood-sucking, serial killing vampire can get intimidated by communication. I twist the latte mug in front of me, slightly fidgeting with its handle as I keep my eyes on Eileen.
She lets out a slow breath, “Firstly, I wanted to give this back to you.” She holds out the gold, heart-shaped keychain I got back in high school out to me.
My eyes widen as I take it from her, “Oh my god! Where did you find that? I totally thought it was lost in the ether somewhere.”
“It was outside my house. Outside the back door, by the window.”
I freeze, blood running cold. Crap. Right, I was supposed to have left. I was… not supposed to know about anything I know.
“Look, I-”
“I’m not mad. I just want to clarify. You can say whatever you want, but I’m not upset. If I was constantly looking to put my life in danger, I probably also would have lurked around outside,” she teases.
