Chapter 16: A Game of Chance

Huge grin planted firmly on my face, I slip into my apartment where River and Kirby already sit at the kitchen table, boxes of board games stacked beside them. I can feel their eyes on me as I tug off my shoes, plop my backpack on the living room couch, and pull open the fridge, looking for a quick snack.

Kirby’s the first to speak up, “Looks like someone pulled themself out of the gloom gutter.”

“Got a little bit of a pick-me-up at the coffee shop today,” I smirk back, my mind immediately picturing the way Eileen looked in those glasses, and the way the warm coffee shop lighting made her eyes almost sparkle as we talked.

River whispers over to Kirby, “She’s got the goo-goo eyes again.”

“Oh boy, here we go again. Who is it this time?”

I grab a block of cheese from the fridge and set it on a cutting board, pulling a knife out from the block beside the sink as I listen to my roommates.

“You meet someone there? Colectivo does have a good array of hot baristas.”
