DAY 3 {after a week and two days}

Our supplies exhausted three days ago. We had nothing to eat or drink, the water had stop running for four days now so it's not like shit. To add to our problems, Theo's body released a really awful smell. At point, we couldn't bear it any longer and had to lock him up in a closet and it took all of our efforts. "We've gotta go" Racheal said. "Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But how?" "There are zombies everywhere" I said. "Well, we'll die in the next 72 hours without food and 12 hours without water" Racheal said as she struggled to stand. I could tell she had had enough of starvation and her instincts to survive were kicking in. "Besides, it's been quiet lately... If you want to die, be my guest but I won't die for nothing. I'm heading out there, you coming? " she said with such confidence that I was forced to agree with.

Her hungry yet determined eyes stared at my face for an answer. " Sure, whatever. Besides, I'm famished. Let's eat. I know a store around the corner." I said getting up. "Before we head out, we need gear. Look for something to defend yourself with, you know a weapon, just in case." She said "Ok".

I looked around and picked up a baseball bat. Racheal got herself a machete and a few fish knives. We moved away the furnitures as quietly as possible. Soon, the door was creaking and slowly opening. The next minute, we were on the street. Racheal was right. There were no Zombies around. The street was still as shitty as we left it or maybe even worse. Flies roved and perched a multidude round puddles of blood. I led the way. We would often take cover and hide from a few zombies that ran here or there probably looking for food. After a couple of minutes, the store was in sight. It looked open and and the light were on.

" Let's go" Racheal said. "Wait" l whispered and pulled her back. "What?" She asked. I pointed out to a corner. A zombie was there and from the blood cuddling low cries, I think a puppy was on the menu today. "If we are silent enough, we could get what we came for." Racheal said. We moved as slowly and quietly as possible. Once in a while, it'd stop and take a sniff or two and continue feeding. I guessed it was too focused to pick up our strong B.O. We snucked into the store. " We need to hurry before it thinks of us as the main course meal" Racheal said tossing a duffle bag to me. " Pack only essentials. I'll keep guard. Hurry up now, will you?" She said.

In a few minutes, I came out with a full duffle bag. "Did you pack the whole store" she said smiling. " Nah, they just had a lot of essentials. " I said returning the smile. I gave her a bottle of cold water. " Where's Hungry" I asked noticing the absence of the zombie. "Scared him off" Racheal said. I pretended to appreciate her sense of humor. "We need to unite with other survivors. While you were busy, I saw a poster of a place the Government called the safe haven. I bet other survivors are there. " My Dad's a police officer and he said he had a storeroom with a couple of satellite phones. I think if we can get one, it will save us time and the risk of getting to the safe haven. " I said. "Agreed. Where's the station?" She asked. " It's not too far from here. Let's go ". We walked the lonely road, eating and drinking. We would often make silent jokes. We found a boutique and took turns in the shower. It was fucking good. " Fuck! What in God's name is that?" Racheal said. She pulled me by the arm to a corner. A few yards to the station, there was a huge horde of zombies but none of them were moving. They all stood at place, swaying around like they were sleeping. "I think it's hibernation hour for those guys" I said. "it's safe to move as long as we keep quiet and remain slow" I added. "are you crazy " Rachel whispered. "we'll never make it" "well,there is one way to find out" I replied with a newly found courage. I kept tiptoeing into the horde. Rachel then followed. A part of me thought it was because she loved me but I was sure she followed so she doesn't have to blame herself if I got killed. We moved deeper and deeper into the horde without touching or making a sound. we were all sweating because it was a big risk. We were gambling our lives on a satellite phone. what if there were no more satellite phones left in the storeroom? what if there was no signal? what if inside the station more trouble awaited us? ......
