It seemed like a long time we sat in silence, my book still hugged to me as I looked out the window. I would feel his eyes on me every few minutes as it only made my cheeks warmer. Even when he shifted in his seat, I hugged the book tighter. When he placed his hand on the gear shift, I swallowed. When he finally said something, I jumped out of my goose bumped skin.
"Ok I can't take this silence." He said as I then looked over at him. His one hand gripped the steering wheel tight, his other the gear shift just as tight as the knuckles turned white. And he was a pretty shade of tan to begin with. His green once clear eyes, now cloudy looked down into my auburn ones as I then jerked my head away, looking outside.
"Next time knock." I said low.
"How old are you now...... sixteen?"
"Eighteen." I said, acidly.
"Right." He said, getting on the highway. "You can't tell me you have never had anyone see you shirtless." I made that irritating noise as I looked down at my lap, moving my fingers along the binding of my book, as my face grew hot. "You're kidding." He kept looking at me, then the road. "Kissed." I shook my head. "Held hands?" Again, I shook my head. "Dates?" Shook my head. "Boyfriends?" Shook my head. He was silent for a moment. "Crushes?" Again, I shook my head. "What kind of sheltered life do you have?"
"One that suits me just fine." I said looking out the window again.
"You choose to not have these experiences?"
"I don't need them to live so I don't push to have them."
"There are plenty of great targets in that school."
I looked forward, calculating what he just said. I then looked at him.
"Boys aren't targets." His hand on the gear shift fingers moved up and down in a rhythm. His other elbow on the window, his hand driving the car.
"Rich boys are." He looked over at me as I looked at him over the top of my glasses. "Don't look at me like that." He said looking forward again a frown on his face.
"Why? You do not like my 'what the hell' look?"
"No." He said low.
"Why? Because it is annoying?"
"No. It's too s*xy for your own good." I groaned, low as I turned my head to look out the window. He looked over at me a few times. He turned off the exit ramp to the restaurant that had flavored soft served ice cream. I loosened the hold of my book, as the car came to a stop at the light. The blinker indicated he was turning right. My excitement returned as the light turned green and he turned right. I sat up more, my hand going to the window as I looked for the restaurant. Another red light as I tried to pier out the window a little more. It was right after the next light. The light changed as he got into the left lane, then the left turning lane. I sat in my seat, as far to the edge as I could go with the seat belt. I watched the cars in the opposite lane as I then caught his green eyes watching me. A smirk on his face, the green eyes darkening as I slowly, like a cat, went back into the bucket seat, continued my blush, as I folded my hands in my lap looking down at them.
As he turned, he laughed. "So, there is still a kid under all the seriousness." He said, which only made me blush more as I sat lower in the seat. "Aww and you pout too."
"I'm not pouting!" I exclaimed as he parked. He then picked something up where the gear shifter was. I sat up, looking around to see how many cars were in the parking lot. It was not too bad. I hated it when there were a lot of people.
"Romance, huh." He said suddenly. I looked over at him as he was leafing through my book. I gasped, reached to get the book when the seat belt held me back. Growling, I unbuckled the seat belt as he had turned to me, holding the book in his right hand. His arm resting on the steering wheel as he was grinning.
"Give that back!" I exclaimed, kneeling now.
"I thought you said you don't need it to live?" He asked. I put my hand on his upper thigh, leaning to get my book back.
"Come on! Give it back! It is none of your business!" I yelled as he held it far from my grip.
"Is the heroine a virgin in this too?" he asked, teasingly as he was laughing at my attempts. I growled again, almost crawling over the middle of the car to reach now, but he had some long arms.
"You can read it after me!" I said trying to reach again for it. He suddenly threw it to the back. "Hey!"
I went to reach for my book, seeing it lying on the back seat. His car was a sports car, so the back seat had two bucket seats. The room between the front seats was so tight together I wasn’t able to reach it.
“See what you did now!” I yelled at Issac. He sighed, rolled his eyes. At the same time, I moved to sit back in my seat, he moved to reach with his long arms to get the book. His elbow made contact with my side face, knocking my glasses off my face. I yelped, falling back into my own seat.
“Oh, sh*t!” he exclaimed. His hands cupped my face as I rubbed my eye. “Are you ok?” His voice was low and concerned, but I didn’t care.
“That really hurt!” I yelled at him opening my one eye.
“I said I was sorry!”
“You asked if I was ok!”
“Same difference!”
“I can’t see without them!”
“Don’t panic,” he said letting my face go to turn, getting out of the car. I got out and did the same thing he did. I opened the back door.
“It’s not like my car is a junk yard.” he mumbled.
I was leaning into the car with my hands on the bucket seat trying to look for my glasses.
“Here.” I felt his hand under my chin as he moved my head up. He was a blurry mess till my glasses slid on my face, being pushed all the way up my nose and perfectly on top of my ears. When he came clearly into view he reached down, then flashed my book in my face back and forth before tossing it up front. “There. Book and glasses found. Happy now?”
I glared at him as he smiled back at me.
“Depends.” He chuckled once, shaking his head as he was backing out of the car.
“Ow... f*ck,’ he mumbled as the back of his head hit the top of the car inside door. I chuckled, backing out myself. He stood rubbing his head lightly growling at himself.
“That’s just karma!” I exclaimed to him. He moved only his eyes to look over at me. I gave him the same smile he did to me.
“Is that smile karma as well?”
“Of course, it is!”
“Well, karma is about to happen again,” he said starting to smirk. I looked at him tilting my head to one side. “This place gets busy in about thirty minutes.” I growled. Mom and Dad were always careful to miss this time frame. They must not have told Issac.
“Let’s hurry in then,” I said almost panicking myself. He chuckled and walked around the car. He held out his hand for mine.
“Come on, it will be alright.” I hesitated on grabbing his hand. I had never held anyone’s hand besides my mom’s when I was little. Maybe it was just a comforting action. I shouldn’t take that into left field and let it get to my head. He is just acting like a brother should, right?
I took his hand as he closed his fingers around my palm. His fingers were not intwined with mine, but I found myself blushing at the small action, still looking away from him as we went in. He stood by the hostess's stand as I looked around, still holding his hand. I moved closer to him as a little boy was being chased by an adult, a baby was screaming from somewhere, and the mixture of people talking different conversations muffled the air. I tightened the grip on his hand as I looked around.
