Chapter 36: Narrow Escape

At the sound of Maya’s voice, Jamison released Kade. He winced once he pulled away, the impact of the encounter only hitting him once it was over. A reminder that the bruises and cuts to his face were still fresh and would need time to heal and fade. He didn’t address her until after he had let his arms fall away from Kade, steadying himself on his own before he turned his full attention to her.

Jamison reacted as though Maya hadn’t just caught the two of them locked together. His bruised features falling into their usual cold stare beyond the swelling in his face. Instead of speaking right away, he listened to the commotion going on above them.
