The next morning, Noah texted Cora to find out if she was alright, to which she told him not to keep being a bitch. She gets it, he has found out that the girl who frightened him about sex is a virgin.
You don't have to be a bitch. Get over it already. She texted
During lunch hours, a Bentley came to pick her up and then dropped her at the hotel where Amelia was staying. Amelia had asked to have lunch in the restaurant downstairs, but Cora wanted privacy so she proposed to meet in Amelia's suite instead.
When she got there, she knocked on the door and Amelia opened it all pretty. She is too girly and always dares to look like an angel to an intimidating extent. Amelia has the same effect on girls too, because if they try comparing themselves with her they feel inadequate.
The two long-time foes looked directly into each other's eyes. Amelia's beautiful haze eyes held admiration and amusement while Cora's large sparkling eyes were emotionless.
"Have a seat", Amelia said, leading her to the table. Cora's mind was blown by how pretty Amelia's suite looked, but was too proud to complement her.
Dishes were on the table already, Amelia had planned it to the last detail. Full table for just two, hoping to impress.
After dining in silence, Amelia asked Cora, "Still don't like dessert?"
Cora hardly replied, which gave Amelia the answer she had hoped for.
Amelia's observation were accurate, Cora had been doing more than fine. Once naïve and calm, Cora was mature and confident now, daring to show dislike to Amelia for what she had done.
Cora hardly thought about Amelia, even on the table as they ate in silence. She was preoccupied with the thought of Noah, which had been on her mind and disturbing since last night.
To Amelia, dessert is a must have. Midway through, Cora interrupted after closely monitoring her. "You know what, you are a stone-cold bitch, Amelia. I hope that you now know better than accuse me of breaking our friendship."
Amelia had a bite in her mouth when Cora started. She stopped chewing, looked across the table at Cora, covering her shock with a napkin.
"I have forgiven you, which doesn't mean that we are back to friends."
When Cora said it coldly, Amelia received the scolding from her once best friend and accepted all she had said.
Amused, Amelia replied.
"I can see you swear now."
What made them friends is not about the families they come from and chance. They are both intelligent and can speak volumes in three words.
"And I heard you bought yourself a stalker", Cora let out the cold joke about Clay. She had hoped to hurt Amelia just a little, but she was proud instead.
Mr. Jackson, her driver, told Cora about him. Cora was happy that he had chosen Amelia over her. Of course back then they were all naïve and craved his attention, as all adolescents do.
Amelia smiled and hoped her friend would reciprocate it, but Cora just gave a nod indicating she had been well informed.
"Who's the guy", Amelia asked out of the blue.
She had noticed how Cora was distracted on the table, and for a while, she had thought it was because of how long they had been enemies. But, the kind of uncomfortable Cora displayed was a different one, as if she was happy in her thoughts.
Being all knowing, Amelia knew it must be about a boy, she just had to ask to get her suspicion out of the way. She also hoped that this would act as a catalyst to fasten the process of getting back together.
Cora is reluctant to share, because she and Noah are not in a type of relationship she can put a label on. They are something, but at the same time nothing.
Thinking about him, for those seconds, brought her face to life, wiping out the cold mask she had been keeping on since they met. "It's complicated"
"If it's any good, the guy was terrible in bed", Amelia joked about Clay to lighten the mood. She didn't want to pressure Cora into spilling out the truth just yet. Their friendship was never based on that.
"Even worse kisser", Cora added hinting a ghostly smile on her face. Amelia's million-dollar smile confirmed it since she had also kissed him multiple times.
"I have someone, he's based in Seattle, but we make it work." Amelia shared first to make Cora feel more comfortable sharing.
"He's not my guy", Cora finally said leaving Amelia interested in knowing about whoever had turned her cold friend into a doll.
"From school?", Amelia asked curiously. To lighten the mood she added, "My brother still talks about you."
That's true, Amelia's brother likes Cora, he had never made his pass on her but he talks about her a lot with Amelia. They all know he is a bad idea, after hearing his Legends about how many girls he had hopped on in high school and the even crazier number in college.
Cora is not Playboy's type, she hates sharing. Amelia knows her brother, although a player and pick, when he is talking about Cora his face lights up like Christmas. He likes her a lot.
They never dwell on him for long. For Amelia's sake, Cora said. "Tell him to call me."
"That I'll do", Amelia walked out of the room to the bathroom. Instinctively, Cora followed her in and met their eyes before smiling.
It has been their tradition to wash their teeth after a meal together, that was since they were in middle school. Cora was reluctant to follow Amelia in, because after that long maybe she had forgotten about it.
Impossible, since Amelia never forgets.
"When will I get to meet the guy, he sounds so mysterious and fun." Amelia resumed the talk and whoever was making Cora feel like that. She was curious, and after those many years, she was more than ready to gossip with her best friend.
Although by now they aren't as close, Amelia considers Cora her best friend. Although rare, they had passed each other in hallways at the campus, and in those instances Amelia was an inch away from talking to Cora.
Cora poured out mouthwash in her mouth trying to avoid answering that, which Amelia noticed. Amelia's beautiful face forged a smile before she extended her hand to grab the mouthwash from Cora.
"He's nothing special, just a local guy with distinction. Don't think much about it, we aren't an item." Cora was trying to make Noah sound like he is, a guy she doesn't have a relationship with and who they might never live to see a day where they might date.
By her explanation, Amelia instinctively saw the picture of Noah in her mind; she couldn't think of anyone more humble but charming than Noah. Even though they have been acquainted for a few days, she thinks he is something. Coming from Amelia, that is the highest compliment she can offer.
Cora saw the happy thoughts on Amelia's mind and thought maybe they had chosen guys with the same character. "Does he sound like your guy?" Cora asked before taking a mouthful of water to rinse off her mouth.
"No. Sounds like someone else I know. Don't tense, he isn't the kind you would socialize with."
"Oh, I'm hurt.
Does he feel the same way about you?"Cora saw the joy on her friend's face and knew what was happening. When she met Noah she felt the same weird energy, even though she was brave enough to hide hers.
"It's platonic." Amelia confessed hastily avoiding thinking about it, because there was nothing to think about.
She had nothing but friendship with Noah and would never in a million years feel anything else for him. If anything, he would be the last person she would think about sexually. He dresses oddly, he is very young and from the lowest of classes. She was confident to her guts when she said it.
"That's what I called it too", Cora confessed something she had never admitted to herself. That she thought they were in a platonic relationship with Noah, and slowly found out she had been making a fool of herself.
She isn't going to put a label on it just yet, because that will mean admitting that she likes the person she is when Noah is around. Just like Amelia, Cora was solid that they would never have a romantic relationship with Noah, until they did.
"Slept with him yet?"Amelia wanted to know just how deep and serious the relationship Cora was talking about was.
To Cora, it is not a relationship until they say so, and they haven't talked about last night or anything else for that matter. Noah just checked in, as friends do, but it's better than the other guys who hit and run.
"No comment", Cora replied, getting out of the bathroom.
Amelia was quick to notice her walking style, and although they have not been friends lately, she knew how Cora does everything. Cora has to remember she is dealing with an eidetic person here. That walk was full of stories, the shameful truth about what Cora did last night.
"First time?", Amelia inquired. Cora didn't get what she was alluding to so she asked, "What?"
"Last night"
"I am already regretting coming in here today.
How many times did you sleep with him, Clay?", Cora was diverting it to Clay, which Amelia was more than happy to answer.
"Twice, and they were all… "
Cora cut her, " Terrible? I know.
I am not going to feel bad if you say that he was good, you know. I never planned on seeing what's inside his pants."
"You forced me.
(Amelia had been selfish before, she slept with Clay to make him hers after the fallout. In truth, she was angry that Cora had cut ties. A brave smile on her flawless symmetrical face)
The first time was painful, but since then I haven't hated it that much. They all talk about first times being a nightmare. "
Cora found an opportunity to roast her, unable to hide her smile and the beautiful dimples, she pointed out, " I am glad you didn't enjoy it, and yes, last night was my first. (Cora hesitated) He freaked it. "
"What?", Amelia isn't aware of the slags, and so she naturally had to ask.
" You should listen to more hip-hop." Cora is not the type to spill about her private life, when talking to anyone, but with Amelia it comes naturally. Not even when it comes to Cate, her best friend.
Cora was shy sharing.
"He made me come."
Amelia's laugh could be heard from the bathroom, she couldn't believe that Cora was joking about having a blast on her first night. Who rates a guy's performance that high?
"You lack experience my dear, one of the days you will encounter a real stallion, and live to tell the tales."
"Sounds like you have had experiences, do tell", Cora was pressured to talk about sex, provided that she didn't have to share more about her relationship with Noah because it is more complicated than calculating molarity.
Amelia smiled hearing that her friend was bold enough to ask that. She has been bolder since the friendship plummeted. The reunion is best for both of them. "I can rate my best at seventy-five, the current one if you were wondering."
"So they can get past sixty-nine after all." Cora joked as she sunk on the couch.
"Criticize me all you want, but one of these days I will have to see him to believe. Is he student? " Amelia wasn't going to let go of the mysterious guy, who sounded like perfection in its simplest form. That would bring a better bond between them, her and Cora.
Cora was reluctant to introduce Noah to Amelia or anyone else for that matter. They are far from being anything and she can't introduce him to her friends only to break up and leave her to be ridiculed. He is her secret, that one which she is determined to keep to herself and never share with anyone.
Those kinds of thoughts got her thinking about the possibility of being something, and it was terrifying.
A string in her heart was worried that the reunion was fate trying to repeat what had happened in the past. She was afraid of introducing Amelia to Noah only to find out that he wanted Amelia and not her, like any guy would do, given the choice between a plane Jane and a creature of perfection like Amelia.
In her mind, Cora never thought about it, because that would mean she cares about Noah, and she has established it to herself that there will be no love between them. She thought about introducing Amelia to Noah one of these days, probably after whatever they have right now has faded away and nothing but platonic friendship left.
Until then, Cora will have to keep her thoughts to herself and the relationship as private as possible.
"I can think of something to get rid of that awkward walking style, you don't want everybody to know what you did last night, do you?"Amelia was tired of waiting for her reply.
Cora blushed, but then a tiny wave came across her face and wiped it off. She wasn't mad about what had happened in the past anymore, she was ready to give her friend a chance to redeem herself. And now that Cora couldn't think of anything that could come between their friendship, she was all in.
