"Then how are you going to find a spot for his weapons?" Harland joined in.

"Because I've got a knack for this sort of thing. I knows where people look, and what draws the eye, and the attention," Vagrin said, producing a coin pouch from his closed fist. "See?"

"See what?" Harland said. "That you've coin? Congratulations."

"Tut tut. Not any coin – your coin," Vagrin said. Harland's eyes widened, and he checked for his belt. Sure enough, his hands came up empty.

"A thief," Harland hissed distastefully. "No wonder you look so…"

"Rat-like?" Vagrin asked helpfully. "I looked like this, and people treat me like this, so I figured I'd act like this, and at least be good at this, y'know? See, I know what draws people's eye. So I know how to hide from it, just as I know how to distract it."

"Vagrin," Vol said carefully. "You understand that if you rob me, I will kill you, yes?"
