"Same as down there, just higher," Vol replied, turning only the slightest amount in the saddle. From his position higher up on the hillside, he could see just how much the soldiers were struggling with the thin state of the embankment. They managed to get away with walking two men side by side – but only just. If any man went too far to his left, the slippy mud would give way and send them hurtling towards the steam.
"Going to be difficult for the carts," Nolan noted, joining him. He gave voice to the same thought that Vol was having. If even the men on foot were struggling, then for the carts, it would be nearly impossible.
"It's impossible, isn't it?" Vol frowned. Nolan had chosen this route for its potential to be more discrete, but already they were beginning to see the problems with it.
