She put a hand on his shoulder, and gave him the same sort of condescending smile that she so favoured. It was as if his problems were so distant from her, and they held no interest at all. Though, when it had come down to it, in the battle with Maddon, Vol had heard the desperation in her voice when she willed him to live. Even before that, she'd heard her frustration when his progress had been slow.

"You do not fool me, Fragment," Vol said. "You're as invested in this as I am. Why do you pretend?"
