Chapter 28⛰️⛰️⛰️

I kept thinking about why Damon would want me to keep his ice powers a secret.
Everyone just keeps being way too secretive in this school. It's beginning to bug me.
~
Madeline and I went to get some food first...I couldn't go one more minute without eating something.
While in the cafeteria, we ate our food quietly, neither of us wanted to start up a conversation.
After feeling a little full from the food, I decided to break silence.
"So, today was fun." I said to her.
"Yeah." She replied.
I was expecting her to say something back, but she remained silent.
"What do you think about my powers? Pretty cool right." I said.
"I guess so." She said nonchalantly.
I noticed she was giving me cold shoulders.
She doesn't want to speak to me, like she normally does.
Perhaps I could reach into her mind for a second just to hear what she's thinking right now.
No harm in that.
I decided to do it after contemplating very hard.
I pretended to be very much invested in the plate of food in front of me, but my mind had already travelled, prying into hers.
(🧠Why is she so annoying!!! I don't see anything special about her so called powers! Pretty useless if I'm asked. Why is everyone so interested in her! Nothing special, nothing!🧠)
I was taken aback by how loud it was in her mind. She was reciting a loud hate speech about me.
This got me thinking,
I'm beginning to think Madeline isn't really my friend like I thought she was.
"Madeline, do you have a problem? You're oddly quiet." I managed to say to her.
I rather not read her mind again if she has nothing good to say about me there.
"I don't have a problem." She replied and smiled at me and focused back on her food.
I chuckled slightly and Madeline shut me a look.
"What?" She asked me.
"Nothing. Just overwhelmed by Alot that's happening around here." I said to her.
"Yeah. You shouldn't worry though. I'm sure the whole school is willing to protect you if anything bad happens." Madeline said and smiled.
I knew her smile was a fake one.
"Right. Although I don't want that. I'd rather much prefer to protect myself when I need to than depend on strangers." I said to her.
"Strangers? So you still consider me a stranger then?" She asked me sounding a bit annoyed.
"No. Ofcourse not. I mean you're my friend and the only one I can trust here. I know you have my back. Right?....I mean we ARE friends, aren't we?" I asked her.
She hesitated for a second before answering.
"Ofcourse we are. And I'm glad you trust me." She replied innocently.
And right there and then, I knew I couldn't trust her, for her mind didn't match her words.
I smiled slightly at her.
We ate the rest of our food in silence. And went back to our dorm.
On our way back, we saw Sage also going to her room.
I really envy that she has a whole room to herself, she didn't need to share her space with anyone.
"Hi Sage" I said to her.
"Hi." she replied.
"So...how did your monster hunt go?" I asked awkwardly.
Madeline just stood there and watched.
"Ok..... Why are you talking to me?" Sage asked.
"Um...I was just trying to be friendly. Cause we're like neighbors...." I said to her and did a small laugh and then looked over to Madeline, who squinted her eyes at me.
"Oh.... You don't have to be friendly or even talk to me you know. We're not friends." Sage said nonchalantly.
"Right. Ofcourse. I know we're not friends." I said trying to brush off the fact that I was embarrassed.
Did Sage really have to embarrass me in front of Madeline.
"Good." Sage replied and went straight into her room and shut the door.
"I honestly don't know why you keep trying to talk to her." Madeline said before opening the door to our room.
I sighed heavily before joining her.

The night was really short, it felt like I had just closed and opened my eyes in an instant.
"Aren't you getting up?" Madeline asked me.
I looked over to her and saw she was already set and dressed.
"I will never be able to understand how you get up so early." I said and groaned.
"If you try practicing not snoozing your alarm and just getting up when the alarm rings, maybe you'll get the hang of it." Madeline said to me.
"Yeah yeah, whatever." I said before forcing myself out of my bed.

DAMON'S POV
I think I messed up.
I don't know how my mother would react if she ever finds out I let one of our family secrets out.
Not every water elementals have ice powers, it's just me. My dad had it too. But sadly we lost him in a battle with the enemies.
When other elementals found out about his hidden gift, they labelled him as dangerous.
Even fellow water elementals were weary of this gift and feared he might misuse it or try to become greater than them.
My mother always believed that his death was plotted. And because of it, she did everything to keep my ice powers a secret from everyone else. Even to our own water tribe.
My mom also had a little secret of her own...a hidden gift that she never dared to use. Unfortunately Sage inherited this gift of hers which is why she always keeps an eye out for everything that happens in Sage's life.... She wanted to make sure Sage never used her gift, because it was dangerous and deadly.
No one must know about these special gifts within a gift that my family possessed.
But now Cassie knows about me.
And I don't know how long she's willing to keep my secret for, not when her roommate is Madeline.
She talks.
And not when she's close to Jake.
She might expose me at any moment...I really want to trust her, but I'm skeptical.

JAKE'S POV
I was amazed by Cassie's powers... With more training, I'm sure we'll find out more intriguing things about her magic.
If she reaches her full potential, maybe she'll be of use to me after all.
After my father fled 5 years ago, leaving I and my sister to fend for ourselves...I made it a mission to find him and confront him one day.
How could a father leave his children and for what?
In purchase of power. Like the one we had wasn't enough for him.
"Hey are you still with me?" I was brought back when I heard Cara's voice.
"What?" I asked her a little bit confused.
Seems she was talking but I wasn't paying attention.
"Seriously, did you even hear anything i just said?" Cara asked.
"Yeah.....I mean no, sorry what were you saying again?" I asked her and she rolled her eyes.
"I was talking about Cassie! You mentioned something about her powers." She replied.
"Oh .. yeah." I said.
"What exactly did she do with it?" Cara asked.
"She found some of us using just her mind. It was really cool to witness." I said to her.
"Really? Nice. What else can she do? " Cara asked seeming invested in the topic.
"Okay I'm done gossiping. " I decided to leave her and go for training.
I don't go to normal classes, I only grace my presence for combat training and any other fighting skills training.
When I got to the training field, I saw Damon there with his fellow wash ups.
Damon and I have never gotten along, ever since we were little.
He was always competing with me, always trying to prove that he's better than me which I find amusing and annoying at the same time. He is not and can never be better than me in combat.
I started doing a few warm ups, while waiting for the instructor to show up.
I was messing around with fire when I saw Cassie and Madeline pass by.
The both of them gave me an acknowledging smile and I nodded in return.
Cassie looked absolutely stunning this morning.
Her eyes in particular were one of the things that always got to me, it was so bright and beautiful, no one could ever get tired of staring into them.
But I knew I couldn't stare for long... I'm not the kind of person she should be with.
I'm not a dating type. And definitely not good enough for her.
I quickly avert my eyes to something else...I don't want to be caught staring.
After some minutes passed, I looked over to where Cassie and Madeline was sitting, but only saw Madeline sitting with her other friends. I scanned the crowd for Cassie and saw Damon and her standing close to each other. They seemed to be having a serious conversation.
What could they be talking about?
I thought to myself.
I tried to ignore all the advances Damon made towards Cassie the other day because I didn't want to seem like a jealous boyfriend.
I don't even consider myself a friend of hers, so I kept my cool.
But it's just so difficult to ignore.
I can't stand the way Damon stares at her. It makes me boil with anger.
