I watched Lavender’s chest rise and fall. We had covered so much information when she first woke up. I wasn’t sure how much of it would keep.
She stared at me wide-eyed while I rambled about how we got back to the library. She didn’t interrupt with questions. She just watched me as if she was watching a documentary on television.
Eventually, I figured she was still in shock. I held her shaking body as she fell back asleep and for the life of me, I couldn’t get the image of her hitting the ground, out of my head.
She took a short startled breath, and I looked down at her. It felt like every inch of her body was touching mine. She would scoot in closer and I already had thought that wasn’t even possible.
I wish I could say knowing she was back at home and safely made it easy to fall asleep. It wasn’t. Images of that version of Lavender flashed while the fear I felt when she collapsed tried to claw back up my throat.
