6 My First Match

We're going to serve.

Usually in volleyball, the first to serve is the setter due to the rotation. (usually anyways)

Shoya was currently the captain, and setter of the team. This match is his first ever official one, and right now, he is the first one to serve.

He's nervous, but his excitement overshadowed that, honestly just the thought of being the first to serve on his first official match makes his mind numb in anticipation. Serving was his specialty after all.

"Ooh! They're just getting started! Daichi-san! Suga-san!"

"Hm"

"One of them's got some energy." Pertaining to a certain shorty wearing the Yukigaoka's number one.

Three players clad in black jerseys walked in in the audience.

The two teams got to position as Shoya got ready to serve.

Starting from the service rotation the current starting players of Yukigaoka are Shoya, Koji, Kawashima, Izumi, Shoyo, and Suzuki. Mori the shortest of the team and the first year was put on the bench for a little while for Shoya knows how much of a disadvantage height is. Though there are other reasons too.

fweet!

Came the official signal to serve.

Shoya tossed the ball up high like usual, however, this gained the attention of the audience as normally middle schoolers don't use any other serves other than normal and underhand serve.

"?"

"?!"

"Oi, oi, for real?!"

"a mistake maybe?"

Everyone was clamoring until Shoya took the leap.

Bam!

The ball came rocketing pass the net with a swift but load roar.

Silence blanketed the court as Shoya's smile grew.

A service ace. On his first game at that.

A service ace is a serve that lands on the opponent's court without being touched or rallied.

"Holy shit he flew!"

"How hard did he slap them balls?! It's still ringing in my ear!"

"He's for real!!"

Daichi, one of the black-clad high schoolers in the spectators' seats leaned by the railing as he looked at where the ball landed. "Suga, what year is that number 2?" He asked, clearly interested.

Daichi is the appointed next Captain of the Karasuno's boys volleyball club. He's a young man with a rather large build and taller than average, he has a rather ordinary appearance with short black hair.

Sugawara, who was beside him had a thoughtful expression as he tried to remember. "I don't really know, maybe 2nd year? or maybe 3rd if he's just exceptionally shorter than average." In all honesty, he was just referencing their height as he wasn't really sure. Yukigaoka is a pretty unknown school after all.

Tanaka, a loud first-year student of Karasuno watched their interaction and also began to pay close attention to number 2.

Yukigaoka's team celebrated but couldn't really get close to their captain as his maniacal smile still hadn't diminished, well except for his brother, whose nose was already at the top of his forehead of how proud he was. Shouting "Oooohhh!!!", "Awesome", and some onomatopoeia that only aliens understand.

The Kitagawa's side of the court on the other hand was silent. Did that Shorty just do that?! These were the universal thoughts of the team, some even thinking that it must be a fluke trying to escape the reality of things.

However, the one most surprised of all was a certain Kageyama Tobio.

'We can fly'

The earlier interaction with Shorty wearing number one made him wonder if number one could do the same thing as his brother.

Although many were still in disbelief, the game must continue.

Bam!

Shoya Served the ball and once again, it was a service ace.

it was not a fluke.

All eyes were on the shorty wearing Yukigaoka's number two.

Shoya tossed the ball up again and got ready to jump.

The Kitagawa team at this point was on guard, the backline took a step back to have better coverage for jump serves, they can't let that shorty shot more points after all.

Shoya smiled at the sight he spiked the ball.

'What's the point of being on guard if you can't even touch the ball?'

The crowd anticipated a hard jump serve again, but they didn't expect the ball this time to be much slower than the last.

Kitagawa's coach's eyes widened with realization. Jump float serve, a serve with an erratic landing due to the added spin when it was spiked.

This type of serve was rare to see even on high school level plays yet a kid from an unknown middle school, at 150-something height, did it like it was nothing.

Kindaichi, Kitagawa's middle blocker, stepped in to take it, thinking it was an easy ball. (turnip head)

"What the-"

However the moment it was about to land on his arm it suddenly shifted to his right, he barely touched the ball as it landed on their court.

3-0

Yukigaoka is in the lead.

"Goddamn it."

Although it had only been three points the faces of the Kitagawa players were grim. One in particular, Kageyama, was glaring at the Yukigaoka's captain.

The same thing happened a few more times until finally, Kitagawa managed to receive one of Shoya's jump serves.

"Tch." Shoya couldn't help but click his tongue as he landed. He quickly went to the front for any incoming ball.

Kageyama quickly set the ball to turnip head. Turnip on the other hand almost couldn't spike it but thankfully he managed to spike it hard enough to not get shouted at by the king.

However, a quick blur received it before it hit the ground, Shoyo Hinata, who then delivered the ball to his captain/setter.

Those three years weren't for nothing after all.

Shoya anticipated the ball and set it to the left side of the net, which confused many as no one was there.

"Yonyon, fetch."

Bam!

Hinata twins, First tempo.

Kageyama's eyes widen as he watches Shoyo land. One moment he was in front of him, but suddenly he had already spiked the ball. Looking at the scoreboard, he knew he had to score, fast.

fweet!

"!"

The referee blew the whistle and pointed in Kitagawa's direction. The ball was Out.

"Ngk-!!" Shoyo let out a sound as he slowly turned his head to where his brother was. By the time he had his head turned, his brother was already beside him, Shoya did not forget to put a bump onto his brother's forehead with a good knock after calling him 'a stupid sandwich'.

5-1.

Kitagawa's captain serves the ball normally. rather anticlimactic really, though it did do the job.

"Kawashima!" Shoya shouted seeing as to where the ball would land.

"M-mine!"

Kawashima cried out and tried to receive the ball, but still, the ball flew to the left resulting in an out.

Although Yukigaoka had been trained in the past months, that does not automatically make every player as capable as their twin senior.

Nonetheless, Shoya was aware of how able these miracle first years of Yukigaoka. He had trained them after all.

Shoya glared at Kawashima, who was the tallest in the team, and silently said,

"You're more capable than that." Shoya didn't even bother to waste a second and walked back to his position while he clicked his tongue.

Kindaichi who was listening in, wondered if the Yukigaoka's captain was much like their 'King'. He decided that it's just not his business and move along.

Kawashima was aware of his own strength and of all his skills and among the first years, he was the best at receiving and Shoya did not fail to notice that. As harsh as he was, Shoya had made the three first years focus on what they excelled at the most during training and taught them everything they had to know, so he didn't take Shoya's animosity to heart.

Through everything he had to go through, he had to fail an easy receive on an official game.

He felt shameful. He slapped his worries away from his face, right now was not the time to wallow in self-pity, they still had a game after all.

fweet!

The whistle sounded as Kitagawa's number 1, their captain, served again, this time deliberately pointing at Kawashima.

"Mine!"

Kawashima already knowing what will happen took a step forward and saved the ball with ease.

"Shoyo-san!"

Suzuki made a follow-up as Shoyo took the spike. However, it was received by Kitagawa'snumber 3, which then Kageyama tossed to number 4. "Orya!"

Shoya took the initiative and dived for the ball, as it soared above the net, Izumi tossed it to the right and Shoyo once again took the shot but once again it was received by the enemy team.

Shoya clicked his tongue as the rally grew longer.

Kawashima received the ball from the back and Suzuki once again tossed it to Shoyo however it did not connect. A silent blur of orange brushed through and hit the ball with a bam.

'A feint?!' Kageyama silently taught as he and Kindaichi jumped to block it.

Bam!

It was another score for Yukigaoka.

***

Although Shoya had trained Yukigaoka to the best of his ability that did not mean that Kitagawa didn't train as well.

Yukigaoka is a patched-up group of rookies while Kitagawa is a team full of talented (honestly they ain't,,, they just sum elites) players. Eventually, they were able to spot a hole in their defense which was two of the third years Izumi and Koji. Even though the two of them are third year, the two of them did not officially train in volleyball, in other words, they're shit at it. Shoya had barely trained them a month before the competition after all.

The score is currently 18:22 Kitagawa was on the lead.

Kitagawa's couch frowned in disappointment as he stared at the scoreboard. They were a title contender yet they were struggling on an unknown team. Although they were on the lead yet only for one digit, it was truly infuriating.

It was Koji's turn to serve, Shoya called for player change and Maki took Koji's place.

Maki is like a newborn cattle as he stumbles to the court, he is as nervous as a man on his first encounter with a woman.

Shoya smiled and patted Maki's back which calmed him significantly. No one might say it but Shoya was definitely biased towards Maki, afterall he taught his specialty to Maki, serves.

Out of the three first years, Kawashima was the best at receiving, Suzuki was the best at overhand, and Maki was the best at serving.

Right now was the first time he would play, and in all honesty, he was a bit excited.

His teammates shouted some encouraging words as they went to the service area.

phew...

with a deep breath, he set his gaze forward.

The whistle blows
