Her time at Caroline's had distracted her enough, though her mind was no less troubled by Caroline's surprising situation. Now her heart raced as she drove up the winding driveway, a mixture of curiosity and dread swirling in her stomach.

She had received Richard's invitation with a blend of relief and anxiety. Relief because he had sounded better, but seeing him would mean lying to his face again, something she was increasingly weary of.
