Chapter 39: Death vs. Life

I wiped my forehead with a towel as I finished helping helping my mother-in-law make today's bread. We had little money, so we would have to subsist on this. At least until we had enough to pay off the debt. Kine had bought us time, so I had to use it wisely.

Kaze's words echoed in my head again. Being the partner of a military man was a lonely feeling, but Saffron would return one day. Plus, this loneliness paled in comparison to the one I had experienced living in that castle full of scorpions.

"Thanks for the help, Rose. But ya didn't have to push yaself," Mrs. Daikiri said, snapping me out of my thoughts as she wiped her floor-covered hands on a towel.

I smiled. "It is a lot of hard work, but it is no bother." Plus, I liked making myself useful.

My eyes shifted to the table as a tiny hand stretched for one of the already baked buns.
