Chapter 33: The Afterglow is Missing

"You're going to marry her."

My words were flat, the tone dead.

The tension in Cane's shoulders told me everything. No matter how he felt about me, he still planned to make her his Consort. He couldn't care about me. If he did, he would do something…anything to make this right.

Wouldn't he?

Or was he so torn by his duty he'd press forward at his own detriment to try to keep his Pack together?

The second one seemed more like him.

Straightening my shirt, I turned away.

"I'll get us back. Just give me a minute."

Cane said nothing, but tension rode the air between us. That tenuous thread between us glowed brighter now, perhaps due to our proximity. Perhaps some other reason. I couldn't focus on it now. Maybe I never would.

"Aspen…"

His voice trailed off. An explosive gust of air came from him, the sound one of helplessness and frustration.

"For what it's worth, I'm sorry."
