Chapter 35: A Public Reprimand

The entire dining hall went silent. I was still laughing at Alec when his eyes widened, and his attention turned to the front doors.

They slammed open, and Evan strode in, his expression thunderous. Everyone stared for a moment before abruptly finding something better to turn their attention to. I was more curious than afraid, so I watched him.

He strode right up to Rory and gripped her by the upper arm.

"Do you have zero sense?" he snapped.

Rory tore herself away and straightened, her spine stiff and her teeth bared.

"I have more sense than the two of you, out here thinking with your di—"

"Do. Not."

Each word stopped abruptly. He took a menacing step toward her, but Rory held her ground.

"You are not Consort yet, little girl, and I'm well within my rights to have you put down if I wanted to."

Rory rolled her eyes. She was either brave or profoundly stupid. I knew which one I was leaning toward.

"You wouldn't dare. Who else would step up to help him manage this pack?"
