Chapter 37: A Prophecy

I flipped the page of A Turtle Goes to Work when Holly let out a loud gasp, disturbing all the other wolf pups. Considering nothing happened in the book to elicit that kind of reaction, I put the book down and found Holly in the circle.

Her eyes were filmed with white.

The book fell from my hand. Jumping from my seat, I scooped her up in my arms, grunting when I realized she was heavier than she looked.

"Stay here," I told the pups. "I won't be gone long."

Most nodded vigorously, but a few threw concerned looks at Holly. I rushed to the office, carefully laid her in her pile of blankets, then pulled my cell phone out and texted Evan.

Cane showed up instead. He crouched over her and brushed her bangs away from her face. Holly hadn't moved since I put the book down. Her eyes were wide and unstaring, but her pulse was strong.

"How long?" Cane asked.

I checked my phone.

"Fifteen minutes. Do you think she's okay?"

He said nothing, only continuing to stare at her.
