Counting Down

Yanagi was devastated that he had forgotten he started this project because of his son. Hokai was almost 12 when the accident happened. Yanagi was still at work when he learned the bad news. After hearing the news, Yanagi drove as fast as he could to reach the hospital to see his son. However, it was too late when he arrived; his son was already gone. He couldn't hear his last words before touching the clouds of heaven. That's why he was creating the artificial intelligence code that could give a robot the human brain, hoping to create a similar code that would match his son's. Reality hit Yanagi; he finally knew why he started the project, he remembered. He was now ready to succeed in this project no matter what.

Yanagi was looking at the picture of his son in tears before hugging it. That day he made a promise to himself that even if the biggest burden appeared on his road, he would crash it with everything he had. That's why he was so ambitious all this time, why he had panic attacks when everything seemed impossible, and why his heart was so blazing!

After this meltdown, Yanagi laughed and thought about the memories he had with him, how his son was always so curious about his projects, his codes, and his inventions. He was curious and creative. Yanagi ended his sad emotions and blazed his heart with ambition and, most importantly, the duty of a father.

Yanagi finally continued his coding. His hands were running as fast as a gazelle. You could barely see his movements. If Yanagi weren't a scientist, he would for sure be the best pianist in Japan, maybe the world, if he also had the music knowledge for that. Yanagi was coding for 3 hours straight, and he was still midway through his final product. The complexity of the human code is truly a mess. However, he had the solution for that. The only thing he should do is just try to code the most approachable human artificial intelligence code. In other words, he needed to make a living computer and then connect the code of the computer with that of his son. And boom, everything would be fixed.

On the other hand, the process is not easy. People who have knowledge of coding know that even an extra letter or even a missing one could end up in an error. Not only that, but a false order or a missing variable can also lead to an error or a different result. So, in other words, he needed to type fast but also triple-check what he was typing. To avoid these mistakes, he was writing for half an hour and then going back to double-check his code and then triple-check for confirmation.

The time had passed, and it was already time to go home; he didn't even notice how fast the time flew. Yanagi's total coding time was ten hours and 29 minutes. The accuracy is for the report. He scratched his eyes and stood up from his chair. Yanagi looked again at his son's picture for a solid minute before leaving for home.

The same routine was running for almost 5 months. Yanagi had no social life. The only trail he followed was the way to his work and back, nothing else. Not a single break for some entertainment or something different from normal. His dedication to completing the project took another level in his heart. He made it his first and only priority. Everything for his beloved son who lost his life unjustly. He wanted to see him walk again, to hear him speak again so he could see and listen to his steps and words. He wanted to learn what his last words were that he lost. Additionally, he was grieving for his hug and the time that he could spend with him.

And finally, it was time to launch the code. Yanagi took a big breath and prepared himself for the results. Yanagi pressed the button, and the code was running.

..........

...10%...20%...

..........

The code was on the system finally. Yanagi was so happy and inpatient about the results. Little did he know that his feelings would go on a rollercoaster. Every single thought of his would pop in his mind just to scatter his confidence about his results.

..........

...30%....50%...

..........

Yanagi was already sweating, and his throat was dry. The saliva going down his throat was loud. Everything could change in a second. A wrong number. A missing letter or misspelling. Anything could happen.

..........

...75%...80%...

..........

The code was loading and was being examined by the system. As the loading was near the end, Yanagi's emotions were fired up. His ambition was fighting against insecurity. Not only that, but overthinking was also there, watching him from the corner. His brain had to process the code but also his mixed feelings. The percentage was raising slowly and Yanagi's patience capacity was dropping like rain.

..........

...90%...95%....

..........

Yanagi's eyes were wide open to see the results of his 5 months' work. It must work; it must be perfect. He had invested everything in this code: his money, his feelings, his time. It must work; there is no other result he can accept. The code must be valid. The dream must not die.

..........

...100%...

..........

Yanagi quickly closed his eyes out of stress; he couldn't face reality. He didn't want to see his code failing. He couldn't let his son die again. Furthermore, he took a breath again and filled his lungs with air and confidence, then slowly opened his eyes. The message on his screen would clear everything.
