Chapter 31 : Break In

The sight of Lila kissing Tahir was too much for me to process at first. I stood in the doorway with my eyes wide open, staring at them. Tahir’s hands were on the desk, as if he was leaning back against it when Lila moved in to kiss him. Her hands were on his chest. His chest.

I didn’t know how long I stood there, holding my breath and looking at them. It couldn’t have been more than a second or two, but it was long enough. I took a step back, then turned and hurried back the way I had come.

I didn’t run; I didn’t want anyone to hear my footsteps. I didn’t want anyone to know that I was there. I wasn’t supposed to see that. I shouldn’t have seen that. It was my own fault for letting myself in. I shouldn’t have been there.

I ran to my car and jumped inside. I was crying already, but I couldn’t take the time to gather myself. I didn’t want anyone to see my car and wonder why I hadn’t come inside. I started the engine and tore out of the driveway.
