Chapter 43 : Lightning Magic

Tahir looked furious and I could only imagine that he mirrored my own anger. Popescu’s comments about me were beyond the pale. To call me inhuman was far more extreme than any of his hateful comments up to this point. He had expressed his disgust at me all along, but he was being hateful and aggressive about it now.

He wanted us to be angry, it would make us sloppy. I focused on my breathing. I needed to keep calm if I was going to figure out a way to get out of this.

It occurred to me that I might be able to use his own tactic against him. He’d already shown that he was prone to fits of anger when things weren’t going his way. It was a risk, but it was worth it. If I could just distract him for a few seconds, I might be able to get away.

“I’m not the one that’s dirty and corrupt,” I said angrily. “I haven’t hurt anyone, unlike you.” I dug my nails into his arm again and pulled as hard as I could. Popescu’s grip didn’t change.

“Silence,” he commanded.
