Chapter 12 : Be Ready for Me

*Kenna*

After the final guest had left the party last night, Uncle Alex had been so angry that he’d calmly sent us to bed. Calm, reasonable anger was always so much more concerning than shouting. I’d clamped my hand over Juniper’s mouth when she’d started trying to explain what had happened to him. Her story about being stood up by a random internet boyfriend was only going to make things worse. I thanked him for being reasonable, then helped Juniper up the stairs.

I took her into her room and helped her get cleaned up and into her pajamas. She kept crying and telling me that she was sorry and she felt pathetic. I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I just kept telling her that it was okay. No harm, no foul. I tucked her into bed with a few pillows under her ankle, to keep the swelling down. Aunt Adelaide had promised to bring up an ice pack for her, but I didn’t wait for her to arrive with it.
