The text message from Juniper had startled me, and I knew that I needed to sneak
away from the party and figure out what was going on. I’d made a lame excuse to Jack about needing to take a phone call. He looked completely unconvinced, but he didn’t try to stop me as I rushed back inside and ducked into the coat room.
I texted Juniper back and waited anxiously for her to respond.
“What do you mean you need help? Where are you?” I sent.
“I snuck out,” she replied. A moment later, she sent me her location.
I pulled up the map and saw that she was about a half mile away from the house. This was ridiculous. She was in for such an earful from me when I found her. I left the coat room and awkwardly circumvented the guests until I could reach the kitchen door and slip outside. I didn’t think that anyone had seen me sneak out, but there was no way to be sure.
