Chapter 28 : Jack's Reservations

Jack stopped walking when we reached the treeline. He turned to look at me, but didn’t speak. It was hard to see his face in the dark, but I could tell that the tense, thoughtful expression I’d seen in the house was still present. Something was weighing heavily on his mind.

“What did you want to talk to me about?” I asked.

Jack sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “I don’t even know where to start,” he muttered.

“Are you alright?” I asked. I’d never seen Jack look so distressed. It was a little unsettling. He shook his head slightly. “I’m sorry that Cassandra approached you like that,” he said.

“I don’t understand why she hates me,” I said. “I mean, other than being jealous that I’m spending time with you.”

Jack crossed his arms over his chest and looked down at the ground. “I’m going to tell you something that not even Matt and Reid know,” he said. There was an odd cadence to his words. It took a few seconds for me to realize that he was nervous.
