Chapter 44 : The Grand Plan

*Kenna*

When we arrived at Uncle Alex’s house, his Beta, Anthony, was standing out front. At first I thought he was there to greet us. The four of us exited our vehicles and started up the walkway. When Anthony made no move to acknowledge or greet us, it became apparent that he was standing guard. I felt my stomach twist uncomfortably. He barely spared a glance toward us. Instead, his dark eyes were fixed on the horizon, like he was expecting someone to appear at any second. Was it really so bad that they felt the need to post a guard at the front door?

The front door opened before we reached it and Aunt Adelaide ushered us inside. She smiled apologetically as she closed and locked the door behind us. “Sorry for the inhospitable welcome,” she said. “I’m afraid things have been pretty tense around here since you left.”

“That’s understandable,” I responded. I wasn’t surprised by the extra security, just upset that it was needed.
