Chapter 42 : Checkmate

*Lila’s POV*

My ears were ringing from the explosion. It didn’t help that Leo was pressing my head down into the cold concrete floor, but with the chaos going on around us and the vicious snarls echoing in the warehouse, I’d take the dirty concrete any day.

“So,” I coughed through the dust and debris as I was finally allowed to look up. “When did you call him?”

“Texted, actually. Back in the car. I was going to wait for backup to arrive so we could storm the place, but it was a bigger set up than we thought. For Zara to involve a human—she’s going to lose a lot of leeway once we bring these transgressions to the council. If we can. If you hadn’t noticed, we’re kind of in the middle of a war now.”

He was right.

War was messy, and loud. I had known that, and I really was not appreciating the assurance that it was worse than I first assumed it was.

“We need to find Luna and Mia while they’re busy. Where would they be?” Leo asked but I could barely hear him over the fighting.
