“I can’t believe this was our room,” Aldith said as she walked around the flowered walls.
“Yeah. It feels like it was another life so long ago.”
I traced my hand around the wooden panels, stopping when I reached the chest that held the toys I used to cherish.
“I remember this,” Clara noted, picking up a stuffed rabbit. “I used to try and steal this from you. I called him Wuggles, but you wanted to call him Renny.”
I laughed. “I liked Renny. It was cute.”
Aldith shrugged. “I dunno. Wuggles pretty freaking cute.”
I rolled my eyes as I continued to trail around the room.
“At least you guys remember stuff. I was too small," Aldith continued.
“It’s okay,” I told her. “We’ll make new memories.”
“Where are they?” Clara asked after a moment.
“Where are who?”
“Mom and Dad?”
I lowered my eyes to the floor, my heart aching again for their loss. “Dryden burned their bodies,” I explained. “There’s nothing left.”
“Then let’s make something,” Aldith suggested.
