“It means,” he said, stepping closer. “That you aren’t safe yet. You’re vulnerable as long as you’re in human form. Until you’re able to shift, he can get to you. But I won’t let that happen.” He took up a hand and gently pushed back a loose strand of hair. “I could never let that happen.”

‘Stop running so fast! I can’t catch up!’ Calix's voice called out to me.


‘Well, maybe you shouldn’t be so slow!’


Calix charged behind me but couldn’t quite match my pace. No one could. I was the fastest and strongest shifter the pack had ever known, and I proved it every day.


‘Yeah! Because that’s how it works!’ he called back to me.


I chuckled in my wolfish way and raced even faster, heading for the river just a few dozen yards ahead.


Calix and I had decided to travel to Crimson Castle, where my sister Clara would be experiencing her twenty-first birthday and her first shift. It was a joyous occasion, and I thought we might surprise her.


She had sent a raven earlier saying she would understand if we were too busy to join her in the festivities, but of course, I neglected to reply. And there we were, running as fast as our legs could carry us miles away from home, all to surprise my sister with THE best birthday gift imaginable.
